Old Home Days
Old Home Days is always the third week in August, the most beautiful time of the year. It's a week of festivities, contests and celebration. There are bathtub races, bike races, and running races. There's a parade, a street dance, and a lumberman's competition. There's a flower show, a quilt show and a photo contest. The Annual Golf Scramble kicks off the week, and the Duck Derby pulls up the rear. People come from towns around and it's the highlight of community life in Phillips. Wonderland
Wonderland is an event that takes place on the Friday of Phillips's Old Home Days week. It was conceptualized by Dr. Susy Sanders and is held in her front yard. Wonderland is free; everything in Wonderland is free. There are several booths, all created by Dr. Sanders and a group of volunteer women known as “The Friends of Wonderland.” All year long these women prepare for the one day event, making faerie wings, faerie crowns, painting magic wands, sewing gypsy skirts, and investing money in pirate hats, cowboy hats and many other kinds of hats that boys like. Magic faerie dust in little silk bags, gold coins, Gypsy scarves, bangles, and necklaces; face painting: helium balloons: coloring books and crayons (graciously donated by Wal-Mart): fishing for a prize (as many times as you wish!); a craft table where children and their parents can decorate boxes and pins and make a faerie house; and a photo spot where the children have their pictures taken, printed off and glued into special folders. Free sno-cones, popcorn (magic corn!), a tour of faerie alley, and soon there will be pirates’ cove, where you can dig for treasure. Wonderland is an event that children talk about all year long. See photos.
Scarecrow Reunion
Held in late September or early October, in a field next to the by-pass to Route 4 in view of the bank, the Scarecrow Reunion offers a variety of prizes for the scarecrows of all ilks. There are welded scarecrows, stuffed scarecrows, scary scarecrows and funny scarecrows.
Christmas Festivities
As the season turns festive, the Narrow Gauge ATV Club puts up lights, holds a house decoration contest and holds a tree lighting ceremony. There's hot cocoa and cider and Santa rides in on an ATV. There are horse drawn wagons for the kids. For caroling, don't miss the tree lighting at the Library.
Ticket Auction Benefit
In January, Winona creates a display of various and sundry donated objects for the Ticket Auction to benefit the Library. In early March people gather at the Library Annex to see if their ticket is drawn.
Horse Pulls
Each Memorial Day weekend there's a good old-fashioned horse pull at the Franklin Park Fairground. It's organized by the Chamber of Commerce and the strength and size of these lumbering horses is awe-inspiring. It's a sight to see.
Cruise Nights
In the summer cruise nights are held very Tuesday from 5:00 p.m - 8:00 p.m., rain or shine, at Country Delight in Avon. Many bring their antique vehicles to show them off, listen to the live DJ—Dream'n Big. Also, don't miss Cruise Night during Old Home Days.
